Confirming the identity of someone representing HMRC

Had a visit from someone who claims to be HMRC?

Don’t worry, you can double-check that they are who they state they are. Here’s how…

HMRC have updated their guidance on confirming someone’s identity and which number to call if you’re unsure.

Anyone representing HMRC should always tell you who they are and why they’re getting in touch. If it doesn’t feel right, you can contact HMRC directly to verify everything, just to be safe!

Confirming an HMRC officer’s identity

If someone turns up saying they are from HMRC, they should have an official ID card on them, which will show their name, photo, and serial number.

  • Take down the name and the serial number on the card
  • They’ll also give you a phone number (0300 123 2012) and an access code

Phone HMRC on the above number and enter the access code. This will connect you with an advisor

Give the name and serial number, and they will be able to confirm that the person represents HMRC

Confirm an HMRC collector’s identity

HMRC collectors will normally visit between 8 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday. If someone turns up outside of those hours and you are not sure about it, don’t worry, just ask them to come back during the standard times and follow the steps below to check who they say they are.

  • Make a note of the name and serial number on their card
  • Phone HMRC on 0300 200 3862
  • Give the name and serial number on the card to the adviser, so will then confirm with you
