Claiming tax relief on your pension contributions just got simpler! If you pay into a pension scheme and qualify for additional tax relief, you can now apply online through HMRC without filing a full tax return.

 

If you are:

  1. a higher or additional rate taxpayer
  2. making personal pension payments or paying in to a workplace pension scheme getting a 20% top up on contributions into your pension pot from the government – “relief at source”

you can now claim your additional tax relief online without the need to submit a tax return.

 

This service will be available to those claiming tax relief through their tax code.

 

If you already submit self-assessment tax returns for another reason you will need to continue to claim your relief via this method.

 

What you will need:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • The type of pension
  • The name of the pension provider
  • The net amount of pension contributions for each year you’re claiming for
  • Your payroll number or reference number

Once you have made the claim HMRC will review the information provided and contact you within 28 working days.
