Every day we are hearing statistics surrounding Mental Health and in particular, the effect on those who face challenges alongside their employment.
In the 12 months to 31st March 2019, there were 12.8 million working days lost in Great Britain due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety. And just this week a shocking statistic was released that revealed in Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly on average, one person a week dies by suicide.
Truro based accountancy firm Whyfield want to change the attitude towards Mental Health in the workplace in 2020 so are pledging to put 25 Mental Health first aiders into workplaces and the business community this year. To make a start they have organised a training course with the flexibility of 2 separate dates, to achieve a recognized MHFA England qualification and are looking for expressions of interest by 28th February 2020 from people who want to be involved in this project.
They are asking for 25 employees, employers, business owners or representatives from all size and sector businesses to attend the 2 day training course and follow up discussion sessions.
Spaces on the courses will be allocated to ensure a wide demographic of sectors are covered.
Healthy Workplaces are already working closely with the business, helping them recently achieve Silver status in their award scheme and will be providing information to course attendees on workplace health and wellbeing and how to make changes in their own working environment.
Cornwall Council are part-subsidising this initiative and Whyfield are funding the remaining fees, venue and refreshments. Those who put themselves forward need to be prepared to give at least 3 days of time to this (2 days for the course itself and 1 day for focus meetings and follow up).
Looking forward they would like to create a focus group of people who want to make a difference and raise awareness of the importance of Mental Health and Wellbeing support in the workplace. They see the training as the first step to achieving this and have the support from Mental Health professionals in Cornwall to help drive the idea forward.
